Malnutrition Eradication Project
Free Nutritious food:
Non availability of nutritious diet in adequate quantity due to poverty and lack of awareness are the main reasons of various ailments of the villagers. In order to arrest deaths due to malnutrition, TRUST, after a medical survey, initiated offering free nutritious diet to children (below six years), pregnant women and lactating mothers residing in Dervan and nearby 9 villages, to enable them to develop immunity, to a certain extent, from infectious diseases, to reduce morbidity especially in children under six and to reduce incidence of anemia in women.
Specially prepared (in-house, under hygienic conditions) nutritious “Ladoos” from wheat, nachani, green germ dhal, jaggary, groundnuts, ghee etc. are distributed to the undernourished children, pregnant & lactating women. They are also treated for anemia, upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea etc. Along with the nutritious food, they are provided supplements with iron, calcium preparations and compulsory deworming is done. The nutritious diet is prepared as specified by National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. The Ladoos are distributed by the well-trained staff of the TRUST, who go personally to every house and give the Ladoos directly to the undernourished and needy. A record is maintained of the activity, about weight gained, Head and mid arm circumference and other positive effects of the diet on the recipients of the nutritious food in the project area. This is an initiative by WALAWALKAR HOSPITAL to combat malnutrition particularly amongst pre-school children and pregnant ladies are also included to eradicate the problem from its root. The scheme is in operation since July, 2001, at an expenditure of approximately over Rs.50,000/- per month. Success of this program will help other Institutes / NGOs in their endeavor to address the problem of malnutrition not only across our country, but also in our subcontinent.
