Leptospirosis Prevention During Monsoon: ‘Lepto Drive’ Initiative by B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital
Leptospirosis is a potentially serious infection that spreads when water contaminated with germs enters the body through cracks in the skin, or through the eyes, nose, or mouth—especially during farming in muddy fields during the rainy season. Early symptoms include limb pain, headache, and fever. If untreated, it can lead to complications like pneumonia, kidney failure, or low platelet count. People with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or malnutrition are especially at risk.
Preventive Measures:
- Treat cracked feet early.
- Take a proper bath with soap after farm work.
- Wash hands and feet thoroughly.
- Take two tablets of Doxycycline once a week during the planting season to prevent leptospirosis (except for pregnant women and children).
‘Lepto Drive’ Campaign Highlights:
- Initiated in 2012 by Walawalkar Hospital with support from the Director of Health Services, Maharashtra.
- Over 6,217 Doxycycline tablets distributed so far.
- 3131 villagers from areas like Derwan, Kosbi, Hadkani, Nandgaon, and others have benefitted.
- A dedicated team of 30–35 health professionals provides checkups, first aid, and medicines.
- Entire campaign is free of cost, emphasizing community welfare and awareness.
This annual initiative has significantly reduced leptospirosis cases among farmers. The hospital acknowledges the continued support from the administration in making this campaign a success.
