Cancer (screening) survey for Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Konkan Division was conducted from 2005 to 2013 by the joint study of Walawalkar Hospital and Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai. From this survey, oral cancer was found to be the highest in the Konkan division. As per the study, the reason for this is tobacco is being used for chewing gum, in the form of gutkha (mouth freshener). Also, the causes of oral health are unhygienic and more were noticed in addition to tobacco. Due to all these side effects, mouth cancer is becoming a serious problem. Walawalkar Hospital came to the notice that it would have a social, economic, and psychological impact on the health of the people.

If preventive measures are not taken at the right time now, this dire health problem can become a major health problem in the future. As a comprehensive solution to these problems, Walawalkar Hospital started implementing Walawalkar Dental Treatment Scheme in 2013. Through this scheme, it can be said that this is a step taken to reduce the incidence of oral cancer in Konkan in the future.

For this program, the hospital has appointed two dental surgeons, two sisters, and two assistants. Two vehicles have been made available for this program. We have started going to Sall the schools in the Zilla Parishad and started providing dental treatment to the students.

The nature of this scheme is to conduct dental treatment, check oral health and treat tooth decay, prioritize the use of toothpaste and brush, free distribution of paste and brush, create awareness among students, teachers, and parents about cancer, bring students who have dental problems to Walawalkar Hospital and treat them free of cost.

We have examined 59000 students until now. From almost 1149 Zilla Parishad schools in villages like Kokare, Dhaman Devi, Vatad, Kuthare, Kosambi, Sakharpa, Devrukh, Janwale, Velneshwar, Parchuri Mirojli, Natungar, Borghar, Sangameshwar, Guhagar, Kushiwade Nardakharaki are examined and found that many students have decayed teeth, toothpaste and brush were distributed to them. 26,000 children with high levels of tooth decay were brought to Walawalkar Hospital and treated with free silver filling and root canals. All these expenses have been borne by Shri Vithalrao Joshi Trust. The aim is to curb the problem of oral cancer in the future and make the future generation healthy.
