Kalyani is 15 months old and is severely malnourished, weighing under 6 kilos. She belongs to a scheduled community and is one of four children. Her parents are employed as labour and earn meagre amount to support their family. Kalyani was dependent on mother’s milk as the only nutritious supplement. Though the family is classified as Below the Poverty (BPL), their size makes BPL rations insufficient. Her parents often go without work, making the situation worse.
During community mobilisation, our staff noticed Kalyani’s grave condition, counselled her parents and immediately admitted her in B.K.L.W.H. on March 1st, 2013.
As per WHO norms, Kalyani was severely malnourished. We initiated a supply of supplementary nutritious items which was given to her mother on 28th June, 2013. After receiving the Items her mother was overwhelmed and thankful to the people of BKLW Hospital and the donor who improved the life of her child.

B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital provides nutritional food supplements to malnourished children whose families cannot afford to feed them.
How It Works
BKLWH provides Nutritional supplement to malnourished children through their comprehensive programme. BKLWH has found that once the programme ends, almost all the children go back to their previous life of malnourishment and abysmal hygiene – mainly because their parents are uneducated and very poor, making child nourishment a low priority. Over a two month period, We observed that most return to pre-programme levels of health. These children need a regular supply of nutritious food, as well as follow-up monitoring, for at least one year.
